Fitness is very important for all children as well as adults. Everyone deserves a healthy heart and a healthy weight. When children do not engage in these factors of healthy eating and regular exercise, certain risks can happen to his or her health such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, high blood pressure and heart disease as well as many more other health issues. When overweight and enter places people can say rude and hurtful remarks, which can lead to low self esteem. This could make a person feel unworthy and go into depression as well as suicidal risks.

Adults and parents can help children develop good fitness habits by kids getting involved in sports or other activities that involve movement. Two activities that could be done are activities outdoors such as tag or even playing on a swing set. A fun game that I play with my kids is kickball. Its fun and the children love to run from base to base. Another activity is just for the kids to play outdoors. Either playing with a ball or finding something that him or her likes to do can be very fun and also good for them.
As a parent of two, I always like to keep my kids busy by them helping me in the garden or by them doing exercises in our own living room. I like it because exercise is free and anyone can do his or her own exercise that him or her is capable of. No one needs an expensive gym membership or to buy expensive equipment.

One quote that I liked is by
Wayne Dyer:You can set yourself up to be sick, or you can choose to stay well. Retrieved from http://quotations.about.com/cs/inspirationquotes/a/Health5.htm

Every child deserves good health and exercise. Exercise is very important for the well being of the child. It helps all organs of the body and keeps the body and mind in shape. Exercising is also great for the heart. Exercising the heart can keep the heart healthy and strong. Our heart is the main function for our body. Keeping the heart and body healthy for all ages is very important. Doing regular exercises of any movement of 30 minutes a day and eating a healthy balanced diet can promote good health and a longer lifespan.

    1. It is very important to maintain a healthy life, if you don't take care of yourself it can lead to heart problems, and obese. For example, I take my health serious by exercising twice a day and eating a nutrition meal everyday.

The age group that I decided to work with is toddlers. Toddlers are in the ages of one and two years old.

Being a mother of two, I was prepared with my second child for hazard and taking caution because I learned and gained the knowledge from my first child. Five hazardous situations that I chose were the oven and hot surfaces, sharp corners to tables, furniture and entertainment centers, outlets, cleaning supplies, and choking hazardous.

Raising a toddler or working with a toddler in the workplace can be very challenging. I know because I have a lot of experience. My first hazardous situation was the oven and hot surfaces. My toddler loved to open the oven and reach for the hot pans on the stove. They like colorful things and are interested to everything in site, I am also a candle burner and my toddler loves to reach my candles. Ways that I changed my environment to a safe environment was to take certain precautions. I did get latches to keep my oven locked and secure. I purchased the flameless candle so my daughter would not get burned. I did feel a lot better after I knew my home was safe for my toddler.

Sharp corners are very painful for a toddler. My daughter was running and fell and hit her head right on the corner to my entertainment center. It left a big mark. I knew that I had to fix this because it is very painful and she was always running. I purchased cloth corners to prevent head injuries and bumps and scrapes.

Outlets are a very scary electrical device. My daughter always tried to stick items in the holes of the outlet and thankfully she did not get electrocuted. I purchased outlet covers that kept my daughter to stay away from them and redirected her into more toy playing instead of Mommy’s outlets.

The cleaning cupboard was a very popular place for my toddler. She loved to see what was in there. Thankfully I purchased locked doorknobs so my daughter could not re-enter.

She was always putting things into her mouth. Everything including the fuzzies on the carpet. I was continuously vacuuming so my daughter wouldn’t put objects into her mouth. I did buy her teething toys to keep her busy and she really liked them and didn’t want other objects. She was really attached to her chewing toys. But, I never encountered a choking episode with my kids.

Certain measures and precautions should really be taken into consideration when it comes to toddlers. I know we learn as we go and gain the knowledge of what we need to provide for toddlers to promote safety. These devices can also be affordable. The dollar general has a lot of safety devices that can be affordable and also reliable.

Families can ensure safety at home for his or her child by doing daily inspections on the home to see if it is safe for his or her children. Some parents may not even be aware of the hazardous situations in their own home. Getting a child specialist or assistance from a family member to inspect the home could also be a very helpful recourse. There are meetings to discuss about safety and other related issues in your local area. By talking to your doctor or an agency such as hospitals or schools could help parents become more educated with safety and what is best for their children.

“ Toddlers are the developmental group with the most potential for unsafe practices”, they do not understand cause and effect”(Robertson, C. 2010) pg. 88

The first scenario that I chose hypothetically was that a four year old was sitting in his preschool class with his classmates and I am the teacher and they all were getting ready to sit down for snack time. The snack today was celery and peanut butter. The four year old eats the celery and all of a sudden I notice that the child is holding his neck and is unable to breathe. I look over and also see another one of my kids on the floor.

My first step in this situation is to remain calm and keep my composure. These two kids need me because I am the ones that could save their lives. The second step I will do is to remain at the scene giving reassurance to the victim and picking out a group leader or if my substitute teacher is there to help keep the children safe and calm (Robertson, 2011) Keeping the children calm and telling them that I am going to take care of the situation and giving them positive feedback may help the class remain calm. I will then send the teacher to go call 911 or if no one is there, I will call 911.

Checking the child and knowing that he is choking, I will give him the Heimlich maneuver. While help is on the way, safety is the number one thing that would be on my mind. By giving the Heimlich maneuver, I was able to get the celery out of his throat. The boy is fine and I put him in a safe place until help arrives.

I attend the boy that fell on the floor and I look him over. I notice he is not breathing. I am going to check his airway to see if nothing is restricting his airway. Nothing is in his throat. I will perform CPR until he starts breathing, if not I will continue until help arrives.

Being prepared for these situations is very important. These preparations can save lives. Having training classes on first aid and CPR courses are very educational and interesting. I am First Aid and CPR certified. I work with children everyday and have to be prepared for situations like this.

Having a plan for safety is always beneficial. Parents and teachers can always educate children and themselves by learning the importance of safety. Having emergency numbers and a plan if a life-threatening situation occurred can make things easier for the victim. “ Good planning and preparation will help the emergency situation go more smoothly” (Robertson, 2010).

  5. It is very challenging working with toddlers because they like to explore their own environment. The first thing I would do is to make sure that I keep all of the chemicals out of reach of the children. I would make sure that they are in a safe and secure environment.

  6. I agree with your post an important technique to remedy choking in adults and children over one year of age is the heimlich maneuver. With this technique, pressure on the body is used to dislodge an abject that is blocking air through the wind pipe or throat.
